In The Heights

Wow. That about sums up my experience of seeing In the Heights. I was totally amazed by this piece of musical theater. First of all, the music was amazing. The latin beats infused with the hip-hop rapping, yet balanced with amazing singing captured me from the moment Lin-Manuel (Usnavi) let "Lights up on Washiting Heights" flow from his lips.
I took a chance on this musical when I signed up for the trip. Jersey Boys fell through (and I am glad), and we could choose b/t ITH, Chicago, or Phantom of the Opera. I couldn't stand the other 2 choices, so I went for the unknown. I think I had goosebumps most of the show. It all started when we were all sitting down, and a daycare group came in with 30+ kids and they all filed in with their seat cushions. I was a little apprehensive to be so close to that many kids because the night before at The Little Mermaid the kids really distracted from the show. These kids were the best. As they sat around waiting for the show to start, they were looking at the stage set and talking to the adult leaders: "Ms. G..look see that subway stop..my house is just around the corner." This show was about where they live...it was about them, and they were a great audience.
However, although this is a story about Latino immigrants (first and second generation) it is a story that resonates with anyone who ever wanted to "get away" from where they live or who didn't appreciate what what their life offered.
I also loved watching how the set worked, often finding myself lost in the side action/movement. When Usnavi's bodega was being used the door swung different ways and the counter slid out. When Daniela's salon was the setting, her chairs and props slid out. It was rather unique to see the settings slid in and out, and change.
It was definitely my favorite of the 5 we saw (Wicked, Little Mermaid, Mama Mia, Young Frankenstein). As soon as I got home, I bought the soundtrack. It is stuck in my head. Enjoy the video..and if you get a chance to see it..DO IT.

New York Trip 2008

I went to New York with some friends in July. Here is a little highlight about my trip. I plan to write more later. Obviously this is my first blog, so we'll see how it goes.

Cheers,
